My sister broke down and confided in me last week. Since having children, she has developed thyroid issues. In addition to her thyroid pressing on a nerve and causing extreme nerve pain, for which she requires nerve-blockers, she has absolutely no energy to do day-to-day things. She tries to exercise but cannot physically do much after chasing her 1 and 5 year old kids around the house.
At a recent endocrinologist visit, the doctor was not sympathetic to my sister, despite having helped her well on multiple past visits. My sister’s medications were not stopping the pain and they talked about her daily exhaustion. The doctor had given up on helping her, saying “I’m your physician, not your friend. I’m not going to sugarcoat things for you. You say you want to lose weight, but you need to exercise more. Go exercise more and you will feel better.” My sister broke down in tears because she cannot even express how exhausted her thyroid issues make her feel. She has no energy left and is always spaced out.
